Fairytales in Paradise
Once upon a time in a world where there was no divide, a single man and a woman existed. She was a part of him, created from his side. As part of the same person they frolicked in a paradise with talking animals, free from thorns.
I struggle to understand how the story of Adam and Eve once found truth in this disenchanted land. There is some element of that story buried deep within our hearts. We long for that fairytale to re-materialize in each of our lives. But something went wrong.
In their perfection they desired something more. They entertained the idea of becoming like God himself. In that moment of disobedience they divided many things. The earth itself grew thorns. The animals lost their voice. The deep bond between man and woman broke as they blamed each other, and God himself no longer walked with them.
This happy, beautiful story ended in tragedy. They lived for hundreds of years longer, gave birth to many children, and then sadly they died. It was not meant to be that way. The woes of this world began, and they saw the fruits of their actions in the murder of their first born son by his brother. Many eons later we still find new and creative ways to hurt one another in our brokenness.
And here I exist in
Portland, Oregon, a hot bed for “freedom” of religion and expression, where you too can pretend to reach godhood if you try hard enough. The same struggle plays over and over again in the hearts of the descendants of Adam. Maybe eventually we CAN achieve the journey we once embarked upon.. The epic tragedy continues to repeat. There is nothing new under the sun.
Sounds like a fairytale, but where would we come up with fairytales if not one of them was true?
